Color temperature of lighting and living

Do you know lighting can affect your mood? That's very true. From long ago our ancestor live on this planet; not around the clock but around day light. They went to sleep when it's dark and woke up to work or hunt when sun came up. And you probably already noticed, sky or sunlight has different color temperature around the day. When dawn or dusk, the sky is more close to orange/yellowish; but it turns into more bluish white when went into day.

According the light spectrum of natural light, lighting manufacture developed different lighting products with different color temperature. Daylight white products are more suitable for work, and warm white products are more relaxing and good for resting.

Take myself for example, I equipped all bedroom/bathroom in my house with warm white light; and I changed rest of house into daylight white LED. That has a very dramatic effect for me and my family. For example, my daughter always had problem to wake up in time to finish breakfast before school. Ever since I changed family room with daylight white LED light, I just have to carry her to family room and she would become fully awake very soon.

Another example is lighting at my work place. I work at a large office building which has all integrated lighting, therefore I can't change the lighting setup myself. Under this soothing and relax lighting, I always felt tired and need to fight drowsiness while doing boring daily business work. But ever since I put a 15Watt Easy LED module on top of my office cabinets, I feel much alive and awake everyday at work. That 15Watt of LED light isn't much, but by blending in just a little bit of daylight white light together with original warm white light, it has great impact on me and improved my performance at work.

On the contrary, I wouldn't use any bluish or daylight white light in my bedroom. I usually sleep light and there are certain point at night, once pass that point, it would be hard for me to fall into a good sleep, sometime even for hours. There are reports say,  even watching iPad before sleep may spoil  precious sleepiness for some, let along lighting...

World Lamp safety

How safe is World Lamp? When you put together the lamp shell, have you ever wonder this question? It's obvious that this lamp shell is not water tight, what if the fire alarm sounds and fire sprinkler starts? To see this video for yourself. Although this video may look funny, but make sure you don't do that at home. And this lamp is not designed for weather, so don't use it at outdoor.
As far as fire safety, all our lamps are running cool, much better than other brand of LED lamps, I can even touch it after it is turn on for a long time. Human skin can withstand about 60C or  140F. The fact I can hold my finger on the metal bracket says it's temperature is still below that.

Will LED bulb pay for itself?

When we talk about something saves, a common phrase we would often use is: "It will pay for itself.", Can we use the same phrase on LED bulbs? Let's start with the math.

A 60 watt equivalent LED bulb right now retails for $12.75 and uses about 10W of power.
A common competitor 60 watt equivalent CFL bulb cost much than that (often less than $1 when with rebate) and use about 14W of power.
If we run one light bulb 6 hours a day, for 8 years it would have run for 17520 hours.

10 Watt LED bulb would consume totally 175.2 kw-hrs, which cost $29.78
14 watt CFL bulb would consume totally 245.28 kw-hrs, which cost $41.7
(based on 17 cents per kw-hrs PG&E average residential rate)

The $12 difference in electricity cost would just pay for the LED bulb; but it took 8 years.
Of course, if that light bulb is light up 24/7, it would be faster, but still needs 2 years,

The real energy saving of using LED light is from its directionallight source characteristic when with right application ...

Eg.  Our world Lamp 30 Watt LED shoplight (uses 32watt power) has light intensity compare to traditional shoplight with two 4' T8 tubes, that's roughly 64 Watt power usage.   Click here to see our shoplight compare to LED bulbs.

For the same case of 8 years.
Traditional shoplight would use 1121.3 kw-hr, that's $190.6 electricity bill
World Lamp LED shoplight would use 560.6 kw-hr, that's $95.3 in electricity bill,
The cost saving is more than two World Lamps ....

All about Environment . . . World Lamp

All about Environments...
World Lamp is a truly environmental friendly LED shop light. It has light output compare to traditional shop light which uses two 4 feet fluorescent tubes; but only uses about half of energy and weights a lot less.
Why I mention weighting less as an important factor of environmental friendly? While all type of LED lamps use about the same amount of energy to operate, other LED lamps weights a lot more than our lamp, they are even heavier than most of fluorescent lamps. The reason being is LED chips are more heat sensitive compare to other light sources. LED lighting design needs to take heat dissipation into special consideration, they typically use more metal in either metal core PCB or metal heat sink to help dissipate heat. That means more mining, forging and transportation would occurred... all those carries some environmental impact. Our patented technology allows us to use least amount of metal as possible. We use it at where it matters the most, directly under the belly of LED chips. And the same piece of metal also serves the purpose of mounting bracket (for chain or nail/screw to attach).
Other than advanced LED technology, World Lamp body is constructed with light weight recyclable material. And it’s fold-able during shipping and storage, that reduces shipping and storage cost.
No wonder Inhabitat mentioned us.  (Our 1st generation World Lamp)

It's about Practical too...
Can technologies save this world from global warming? I don't have the answer. But I do know if people don't adapt to new technology, then technology alone is just useless.
LED is a great light source, however most LED products are expensive compare to fluorescent light. Today a decent LED shop light would cost few hundred dollars; yet energy usage cut back from already pretty efficient fluorescent lamp  is just minimum, it would need years of usage to compensate the high initial cost of LED fixture, that leads to slow adaptation rate.

So how can World Lamp help? World lamp is proposing a low cost LED lamp design for the widest use around the world. Only when more people can afford it, then more would adapt to this energy efficiency lighting.  For achieving this purpose, It should not cost much higher than fluorescent products, so people would have very little excuse to continue using those mercury contained products.
And we also would like to support a popular product. Shop light is one of most widely used lamp in US and many places in the world. Currently most stores/warehouse in American still use fluorescent tube shop lights. and in almost every store, you can always spot several dark tubes awaiting for repair or replacement.

Our Shop light design is so simple that its shell is made with 1 piece of recycled material board, and it can be put together on the spot in less than a minute. It is an ideal convenient/utility lighting product.

We will come out more colorful lamp shell choices for different tastes soon.

LED Kit installation -- Wiring

Before start to install, make sure the power switch is off or plug is pulled; handle LED modules with metal bracket, DO NOT touch the yellow LED balls.

The center of wiring is base on driver. There are two sides of driver, one side is AC side with brown/blue wires and the other side is DC side with red/black wires.
Our AC input is universal AC range from 95~ 265V AC, that covers all household AC systems around the world.

DC is polarities, connect the red wire to the yellow wire from LED module(s) and connect the black wire to our white wire.

Before connect the wires to AC, make sure the power cord is unplugged or switch off.
AC is non-polarity, you can match the pair freely. Use either  twist cap or electrical tape to connect the wires. Make sure the connection is secure and no copper is exposed.

Fasten LED module and driver.

For even and clean surface, use double sided tape for installation. Our double sided tapes are 300% stronger than the ones you can find from office depot and can withhold 212F temperature. Just peer off the cover and press object firmly against surface. (a minimum application pressure should be 15 pounds in order to achieve maximum bond strength.

The dwell time the tape needs to be in contact with both surfaces, before it reaches it maximum adhesion, is 1 hours. )

For uneven or lose surfaces, use included screws for installation, still use double sided tape for positioning. Use 7/64" drill bit to drill two pilot holes for each object and apply screws.(Wear eye protection) The 3/8" screws are for power supply and ¼" screws are for light modules.

Do NOT turn on the light (heat up) before the tape dwell time (1 hour) is met

For instance installation, use screws.

Our color temperature and CRI

The LED we use is Cree XT-E with natural white 3700 ~ 5000 K color temperature

The two LED tubes on the right is from other vender, their color temperature is at 6500K, kind of bluish. The lamp on the left is using Easy LED solution.

CRI ( Color Rendering Index) is 80

Ntual white is not only suitable to grow plants; but also good for people to see clear, to work...

Bedroom light on the other hand is more suitable to use warm white at 2700 K, because that's more close to sunlight of dawn or dusk.

Another comparison photo is among Cree Warm white LED bulb, Easy LED natural white and 6500K LED tube. In below photos, our Easy LED is placed at middle.

World Lamp LED shop light vs. LED Bulbs

Here is the set up of this comparison: On the left side, there are 4 Cree LED bulbs, each runs 9.5W and cost $12.75. Totally 4 bulbs use 38 watt and cost $50, they are fixed on a board and hang from a horizon pole; on the other side hangs our 30watt World lamp LED shop light ($50 each) at the same height. Right in the middle, I have a vertical board set up to reduce interference between these two.

The result can be seen in this photo as well as on a Lux meter.

As you can see, the 4 bulbs emit light to all direction vs. LED shop light puts most of light at down below. in the end, the Lux meter recorded 406 lux from less powered LED shop light; and the 4 Cree LED bulbs side only recorded 308 lux. It would probably need 22 watt in shop light to get same brightness as LED bulbs with 38Watt.

LED Ceiling light application

Troffer Lamp is one popular ceiling lighting, mainly use fluorescent tubes as luminaries. There are many reasons to select LED over fluorescent, but high cost of LED Troffer Lamp definitely is not one of it. The easiest and cheapest way to convert fluorescent luminaries to LED is to use Easy LED kit.

To apply this kit, just to gut off everything fluorescent and only leave AC wires; then stick Our LED driver and module up against the metal case of Troffer lamp, then connect AC and DC wires, totally 4 connectors. Depends on whether an extra diffusers are needed, our kit has optional diffuser films. Just like that, the conversion is done.

Another popular ceiling lighting is ceiling panel light, which usually has luminaries and diffuser panel to soft the light. This is very suitable for using our kit. Just module our LED module  to shine light on existing diffuser panel.

Is LED Light suitable to grow plants?

According to Wikipedia, suitable light to grow plants are:
Natural daylight has a high color temperature (approximately 5000 K). Visible light color varies according to the weather and the angle of the Sun, and specific quantities of light (measured in lumens) stimulate photosynthesis. Distance from the sun has little effect on seasonal changes in the quality and quantity of light and the resulting plant behavior during those seasons. The axis of the Earth is not perpendicular to the plane of its orbit around the sun. During half of the year the north pole is tilted towards sun so the northern hemisphere gets nearly direct sunlight and the southern hemisphere gets oblique sunlight that must travel through more atmosphere before it reaches the Earth's surface. In the other half of the year, this is reversed. The color spectrum of light that the sun emits does not change, only the quantity (more during the summer and less in winter) and quality of overall light reaching the Earth's surface. The color rendering index allows comparison of how closely the light matches the natural color of regular sunlight.

The light spectra of different grow lights

Different stages of plant growth require different spectra. The initial vegetative stage requires a blue spectrum of light, whereas the later "flowering" stage is usually promoted with red–orange spectra. The reason: blue spectra are good to grow stem, orange spectrum are good to grow leafs.

The perfect LED grow light has controllable Blue and Yellow/Red LEDs, these special design LED lamps are usually more expensive

The other important factor is light intensity, a perfect grow light should give 1,000 but no more than 10,000 lux as compare to real sunlight. Many grow lights has adjustable height design for keeping perfect light intensity.

10,000 ~ 25,000 lux: Full sunlight, (not direct sun)
1000 lux: Overcast day, typical TV studio lighting
400 lux: Sunrise/Sunset on a clear day

Easy LED Lighting's natural white LED, which has energy concentrated at  3700 ~5000 K; but that doesn't mean there is zero energy at outside of this spectrum range, and it can certainly to grow plants. A cheaper way to enhance plant growing performance is to add (cardboard) panels painted in fluorescent blue and orange color at near the top, they can absorb reflective white light energy and emit blue and orange light.

As for light intensity, Easy LED module can be easily adjustable hang to desired height to reach perfect light intensity.
